Today,
we salute one of our own.

A special message from
Ann’s Bridal Bargains: The company president talks about his son’s service in
the U.S. Army and what Memorial Day means to his family. (Keep reading to find
ideas for honoring loved ones at your wedding who can’t attend.)

Q: What is your son’s title
and how long has he served in the military?

A: My son is a specialist
in the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, of the U.S.
Army. He has been serving for more than four years.

Q: How do you feel about
your son being in the military?

A: Two words: pride and
fear. He has served his country willingly, responsibly and admirably, but of
course, we have been through several hard times where we have experienced a
very real fear for his safety.

Q: How does your family
celebrate Memorial Day?

A: We have always
prominently displayed patriotic decorations around our home along with having a
grill-out for friends and family, but when our son joined the army and spent
his first tour in Iraq, the day took on a whole new meaning. We now feel an
overwhelming sense of pride and support for all those who have and continue to
serve our country.

Q: Do you have any advice
for the friends and families of those who serve our country?

A: Be supportive – We came to realize it was not overly important to
know everything our son was doing in the military; it was more important to
express our support every time we talked to him
.

Be patient – The desire for regular communication with a
military loved one can often be met with delay, so a little patience is
required.

Be proud – Serving in the military is one of the most
honorable forms of patriotism one can demonstrate on behalf of their country.
Display your pride however you see fit, and publicly show your gratitude to all
who have and are serving by thanking them, no matter where you are (airport,
restaurant, etc.).

Include the
people you love in your special day, no matter where they are.

If someone you love is in
the military and can’t attend your wedding, do something special in honor of
that person. Set up a photo with a summary of how long your loved one has been
in the military, his/her title and duties. Set out a photo book dedicated to
your relationship/friendship. Have friends and family sign a page or two in the
photo book with the things they enjoyed about the wedding, and give the photo
book to your loved one on his/her return.

If you’d like to remember a
loved one at your wedding who has passed, there are several options for
creating a nice memorial. Display an In Loving Memory vase with a beautiful
arrangement of flowers at the ceremony and the reception. Include a nicely
framed photo of the loved one with the flowers. Or include an In Loving Memory
candle
in your wedding ceremony. You choose a time within the ceremony to light
the candle in remembrance of your loved one.

Tips for creating a proper wedding ceremony seating arrangement:

• The groom’s family and friends sit on the right side of the church or venue

• The bride’s family and friends sit on the left side of the church or venue

• Always seat parents in the first row on their appropriate side.

• Reserve first few pews or rows of chairs for guests of honor, such as grandparents, godparents, immediate family, etc. (Pew bows are a great way to indicate reserved seating.)

Wedding Reception

Tips for creating a successful wedding reception seating arrangement:

• It is customary that the bride and groom determine seating arrangements

• Ideally, all guests should feel as though they’ve been seated in a special spot

• Remember to think in terms of compatible dinner partners

• Use wedding place cards to show guests where they will be seated

• Find wedding place cards that coordinate with your wedding reception table decorations

• Traditionally, there is a separate table for the parents of the bride and the parents of the groom. Other close family and friends may be seated at these tables, as well.

• It is not advised to seat divorced parents together, even if they have a good relationship. Each parent has extended family and friends that make seating them all together difficult.

• At the head table, the bride and groom sit in the middle with the bride to the right of the groom. The rest of the head table may be arranged however the bride and groom prefer.

Wedding place cards are used on all tables, including the head table. Add a special touch to your head table with wedding reception table decorations that coordinate, but are slightly unique.

Most importantly, keep guests comfortable! Take into consideration good table partners and easy seating access for the elderly and handicapped.

Unity sand ceremonies are becoming more and more popular as an alternative to unity candle ceremonies. Many couples are choosing unity sand over unity candles for outdoor ceremonies or for the joining of two families.

Unity Sand Ceremony

Here’s how the unity sand ceremony works:

The couple needs one large, clear vase and two small, clear vases. A white or ecru sand is usually chosen as the base to represent the couple’s religious foundation. Then the bride picks a color of sand for her smaller vase and the groom does the same. During the wedding ceremony, the couple pours their sand into the larger vase to symbolize their union. If children are involved, they will each receive their own vase with their own color of sand to be poured as well.

Unity sand can be used in lots of other ways though. Here are a few ideas for incorporating this cute and inexpensive decoration into your wedding:

• Centerpieces — gather some votive holders, small vases or decorative dishes and fill them with sand and sea shells to be used as table centerpieces.

• Sprinkle sand along an aisle runner to bring a beachy feel to an indoor summer wedding ceremony.

•Sprinkle sand on your guest book table or head table for a beachy feel (just be careful during clean-up).

• Get different colors of sand and set up a table for guests to make their own wedding favors. Include various sizes of clear glass bottles and vases for guests to choose from.

• Use unity sand to create weights for helium balloon decorations.

Heather is our winner by random selection!  Heather is going to use flowers that are in season to save money, but she’ll also be donating the flowers to church and local elderly homes so others can enjoy the beauty of the flowers. Heather also suggested using small reception centerpieces and candles instead of flowers to save on cost. Add some extra sparkle with rhinestones or faux pearls.

Thanks, Heather, for all the great comments about how to save money with your flower budget
