Title: Bargain Tip - salvage super find!

Jackie and I found this silver serving piece at the local thrift shop for $2.99!  It worked perfectly for our cheap candy buffet.  After a little silver polish you can see just how beautiful it looks.  Don’t let a tarnished bargain pass you by…a little elbow grease and voila!

Challenge: Create a candy buffet suitable for 100 guests that costs under $200

Theme: Rustic/country charm

Colors: Bright shades of green and white

Challengers: Carynn & Jackie

Jackie (our photographer) and I started by scouring local thrift stores. In just two hours we found a variety of “milk glass” containers in all shapes, sizes and textures. We picked up a few utensils to use as serving pieces and spent a total of $34.85 on the glass containers, serving pieces and an old lace curtain that served as our tablecloth.

Next we went online and purchased candy in bulk from www.candywarehouse.com where you can shop by color, flavor, occasion, brand and candy type. We happen to LOVE the stripes in the candy sticks and marshmallow puffs. Since we were able to score a free shipping discount, our candy total for the buffet came to $95.65.

We decided to throw together some DIY decorations to jazz up the buffet table. I created a “SWEETS” banner to hang behind the candy buffet. I printed the letters out, cut them down and adhered them to green patterned scrapbook paper. I punched out holes on the top two corners of each pennant and ran white ribbon through them to create the banner. Super easy, very cute and since I used ribbon and paper we already had, it was $0.00!

Finally, we needed treat bags for guests to put the candies in so we went with the White Favor Bags from Ann’s and personalized them with names and wedding date. 100 bags came to $49.98.

Our grand total was $180.48 for 100 people!

P.S. The glass containers will be great additions to your new home décor or for future parties after the wedding. Although you may need to borrow them out to other brides/friends who loved your idea!

buying a wedding dress online

Every bride wants her wedding day to be special, and finding the perfect dress is crucial. Most of today’s brides can’t afford to pay big money for one gown, so many are turning to the internet to find wedding dresses for a price they can afford. Buying a wedding dress online can be risky though, so here are tips to ensure you don’t end up with a less than impressive dress.

1. Give yourself plenty of time to shop, purchase and get alterations for your wedding dress.  If you end up ordering your dress, it can take months for it to arrive.

2. Shop bridal stores first to try on various dress styles. Write down the designer and style number of the dresses you like so you can find them online later.

3. Only buy from online retailers authorized by the dress designer. You can find a list of authorized retailers on the designer’s website.

4.  If you can’t find the website in the list of authorized retailers, consult a list of websites to avoid like this one from Allure Bridals or this one from Mori Lee.

Here are some websites that are authorized retailers for many popular wedding gown designers:

http://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/BridalGowns.aspx

http://www.plussizebridal.com/Default.asp  But Not http://www.plussize-wedding-dresses.com/

http://www.victoriasbridalcouture.com/index.html

http://www.newyorkdress.com/connect/about.html

http://www.houseofbrides.com/

http://www.bestbridalprices.com/

5. Before you purchase your dress online, make sure you are aware of the website’s policies on sizing, defective merchandise and returns.

6. Keep documentation of all communication with the website, including questions you ask prior to completing the purchase, order confirmations, website policies, etc.

7. Upon receiving your order, inspect the dress thoroughly and try it on. Many websites limit the number of days you have to make a return.

Following these simple guidelines can help protect you from a bad online purchase, but buying online isn’t the only way to save big on your wedding dress. Read our post, Checking it off the list! budget destination wedding

Finally, what you’ve all been waiting for! We’ve gathered some excellent tips and advice about how to keep costs down when planning your destination wedding. We hope this information is helpful.

• Book your wedding in the off-season. Every destination has a peak travel season, but that will be far more expensive. Do your research on the destination and its weather though. You may have to contend with less than desirable conditions.

• Plan an on-site wedding, meaning the wedding will take place at the lodge or resort you are staying in. Planning something off-site gets to be difficult and expensive.

• The more events you plan in one location, the more you can negotiate prices and special requests. This is something to consider when choosing a lodge, hotel or resort. Choose one that has a variety of venues for dinners, the ceremony and the reception.

• Choose a location that’s naturally beautiful and doesn’t require a lot of decorating.

• Work with local vendors rather than importing anything.

• Keep the wedding party small.

• All-inclusive resorts and cruises provide you with accurate costs right away, which is very helpful for planning a destination wedding on a budget.

• Try to do as much planning as possible in one pre-wedding trip. If you can’t afford a planning trip, do some serious research on destination locations that are reputable and have excellent wedding packages.

• Ask your phone service provider if they offer an international plan, or what the charge will be per minute. You don’t want to incur phone charges while in a foreign location.

• Choose a location that provides as much as possible, such as decorations, table cloths and wedding favors. You want to avoid shipping charges if you can.

• Pack as light as possible to avoid baggage surcharges.

• Many hotels charge a delivery fee for welcome baskets or favors. Deliver these things yourselves, place them at the front desk or hand them out at the rehearsal dinner.

Well, that wraps it up. Are you sad that our destination wedding series has come to an end? Don’t be. Now is time for the fun part…shopping!

The Ceremony Venue

My husband and I got married on June 16th, 2012, at the church where we are members. We got to know the pastor very well through marriage counseling. He is awesome! He took the time to tailor our ceremony to our personalities and the challenges we may have in our relationship. It was perfect. My only regret is not having it videotaped.

Our church has a gorgeous, ornamental alter and beautiful stained glass windows, so we didn’t feel the need to decorate a lot. We rented candelabras, white bows and ivy from the church to decorate the ends of the pews, which the church’s wedding coordinator’s took care of.

The Reception Venue

We had our reception at Farmamerica, a venue dedicated to preserving a bit of Minnesota’s farm history. The land is home to a 1850s farm, a 1930s farm, a country church and a schoolhouse. These made great backdrops for our outdoor photos. Our reception was in the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center (a.k.a. visitor’s center). The tables and dance floor were set up in the ballroom. The guest book table, cake table, food and bar were set up just outside the ballroom.

How We Saved

1. When choosing wedding vendors, we did two things to help keep prices low. We used local vendors as much as possible, and we used our connections for the rest. All of our wedding vendors were wonderful.

2. I purchased my dress from a store that includes alterations in the price of the dress. I chose a dress that fit my personality and figure, at a cost that was much lower than most dresses ($671).

3. We are members at the church where we had our ceremony, and that made it very affordable. We paid $140 for the ceremony, wedding coordinators, the pastor and the decorations for the church. We did hire a musician, but she was also a member of the church and gave us a very good price.

4. We chose the local bakery for our cake, and found out she does catering, too. We had a buffet to avoid additional costs of table service. We chose plastic plates, plastic silverware and paper napkins to keep prices low. We bought them online to save even more money. We chose a small, decorated cake for display and sheet cakes for our guests.

5. The caterer’s mother was the local florist, so the caterer recommended decorating the cake with fresh flowers to match our bouquets (super cheap). Our bouquets included inexpensive flowers, such as gerbera daisies, alstroemeria, mini carnations and a variety of greens.

6. Our reception venue did not have a liquor license, so we brought in liquor and beer ourselves. This allowed us to offer unlimited free drinks to our guests. We used plastic cups for the drinks and can coolers, which doubled as favors, to keep the beer cold. The venue had a portable bar we could rent, which had unlimited soda.

7. My stepdaughter works part-time for a DJ. Naturally, she asked him to DJ the dance at our wedding. He also brought the pink up-lighting we used to enhance the decorations.

8. My husband and I set a budget before we started planning and agreed to stick to it, but we both chose one thing that was most important to us to splurge on. That happened to be photography. We felt it was important to have quality pictures to remember our wedding day. We interviewed ten different photographers, but the ones we liked were out of our price range. My sister’s friend, who is a photographer herself, helped us out. She found us five different photographers who were available on our wedding day in our price range. She recommended one in particular, which is the person we chose. Her price was excellent for two photographers, unlimited time and rights to reproduce the images.

So there you have it.  All the things we did to have a beautiful wedding on a $15,000 budget. Feel free to comment!  We’re more than happy to answer your questions.

It’s exciting to think about your upcoming wedding and all the plans and dreams you have. Then reality sets in and you realize how quickly the cost of those big plans is going to add up. Time to start saving for that big day! Saving for Your Wedding

Here are a few quick tips that will help you save for your wedding:

1. Set a budget. Think about what type of wedding you want, the size, location, etc. Once you have your arms around a specific number it will be easier to develop a plan for saving.

2. Plan to put away a specific dollar amount each week. Even if it’s a modest amount, it will add up over a year’s time. Or, take your wedding budget and divide it by the months until your wedding day and let that determine your monthly savings amount.

3. Find a credit card with benefits or cash back. If you find a credit card that offers air travel, you could earn airfare for your honeymoon. Be sure to verify interest rates and terms before you sign up.

4. Curb your spending. Consider whether the item is a want or a need. Find ways to sock away some cash by limiting unnecessary purchases, stop eating out, or cut back on extras.

5. Barter or trade for what you need. You may have friends or acquaintances that can help with some of the items needed for your wedding. Maybe you can take care of the neighbor’s taxes in exchange for their desktop publishing services.

How to Set a Wedding Budget

Congratulations – You’re engaged! Now comes the fun of planning your special day! But where do you begin when there are so many decisions to make?

An easy first step is to create your budget. A budget will be the most important factor in planning your wedding. To give you a general starting point, here is a breakdown of percentages for important wedding needs.

Expense Percentage

Ceremony                                                             2%

Reception                                                           48%

Attire (bride and groom)                             10%

Flowers and decorations                                8%

Music                                                                      7%

Photos & Video                                                10%

Wedding Stationery                                          3%

Wedding Rings                                                    3%

Transportation (limo)                                      1%

Gifts for wedding party                                    3%

License, Fees, Tips, taxes and overages   5%

Your budget is not only a way to keep track of what you’re spending, but it’s also a handy checklist of things that need to be done. For a printable wedding budget worksheet, click here.

This general guideline will help you decide where your money will be best spent. However, every couple’s priorities are different and there may be areas that are more important to you. You can certainly allot more money to those areas and scale back the ones that are less important.

Be sure to check out the blog posts in our “Wedding Planning Guide.” We go into detail about each of the topics listed above to help you make well-informed decisions.

1. Cut the guest list! We know it’s hard, but we guarantee it will save you a lot of money.  You can also select certain people, like coworkers and college buddies, to invite to the dance only.

2. Don’t purchase a “bridal gown.” Shop white bridesmaid dresses or white evening gowns at local department stores. Also look for credible online sites selling wedding gowns, bridal shops that include tailoring in the price of the gown and check out those online bridal classifieds where you can find dresses for sale that have never been worn. Don’t be afraid to shop at a bridal store where you can try on the dresses and then look online for them afterwards.

3. Schedule your wedding date in the off-season. Late fall and winter months are generally cheaper than spring, summer and early fall. Choose any day but Saturday, or choose to have a morning/early afternoon wedding. Imagine how beautiful a brunch or lunch reception would be, and how much cheaper! Destination weddings are often on a weekday since all the guests are on vacation with you.

4. Find a cheap reception location: outdoor parks, a family member’s place in the country, church halls or something totally new like a bowling alley. Make sure to weigh the cost difference between a facility that provides the tables, chairs and dishes for you versus a facility where you will have to rent those things.

5. Find a reception location that allows you to bring alcohol in. Many wedding venues increase the cost of alcohol way beyond what you could purchase it for yourself.  Liquor stores often give discounts to customers purchasing bulk amounts of liquor, and you can typically get an even deeper discount if you pay cash for it.

6. If you can’t bring in your own alcohol, limit the open bar to a few wines, a few beers and a few signature drinks. Guests can pay for any drinks not included in that selection. We’ve also seen couples use tickets. When using the ticket method, you purchase a certain amount of tickets in advance and someone at the reception is responsible for sharing them with the guests. Each guest should get one or two tickets, but you can give additional tickets to the bridal party and anyone else you feel should get more.

7. Choose flowers that are in season or go with fake flowers. Roses, hydrangeas, orchids and stephanotis are all flowers that are more expensive.  If you would like to have real flowers in your bouquet but would like to keep the cost low, some inexpensive flower options include carnations, alstroemeria, gerbera daisies and greenery.

8. Choose inexpensive menu items. Chicken, turkey and pork are cheaper than other meats, and any kind of pasta or rice entrée is an economical option. Buffet’s are often less expensive than having meals served to your guests at their tables.

9. Choose a small wedding cake for display and use cheaper sheet cakes for serving to wedding guests. If you like different flavors of cake, this is your opportunity to choose a few of your favorites depending on the size of your wedding.

10. Negotiate, negotiate and negotiate some more. Most prices for wedding vendors are not set in stone. Make vendors aware of your budget. That way they will show you things completely within your budget or just over it. Don’t be afraid to tell them you like their service, but it just doesn’t fit into your budget. Often times they will try to lower the price where it is agreeable between the both of you or they may have payment plans available.
