Budget-savvy wedding ideas and tips!

About 50% of your wedding budget will be spent on the reception. Here are a few money-saving ideas to help Bargainista brides stretch those dollars.

1. Consider a buffet style service rather than a sit-down dinner. You’ll save in labor costs required for plated service, and guests can help themselves to food at their own pace.

2. Food stations are very popular. Select themed or ethnic foods like Italian, Chinese and Mexican, all of which are low-cost options for feeding larger groups of people. Plus, guests will enjoy mingling as they grab their favorites.

3. Avoid a Saturday reception. Wedding facilities, caterers and other services usually cost more on Saturdays, and you may have a hard time finding open dates and times to fit your needs. Avoid holidays and peak prom or wedding seasons, too.

4. Time of day matters. Choose the time of your wedding reception for late afternoon or after 7:00 p.m. so that a cocktail or beer/wine reception with hors d’oeuvres is appropriate. Based on the time of the wedding, your guests will not expect a full meal.

An early morning wedding and a brunch reception is also an alternative. Serve fresh fruits, pastries, quiche, coffee and juices.

5. Shop around for rentals. Some caterers or reception halls may provide rental table cloths, napkins, glassware, china, silverware and include them as part of their “full service” at a cost that would be no higher than obtaining them from another source.

6. Paper napkins or linen napkins? Cocktail and dinner sized paper napkins are an inexpensive way to add color to your reception without the rental cost. Some guests even feel more comfortable using paper. Order extra cocktail napkins for the bar, punch table, cake/dessert table and appetizer table for a cohesive look.

7. Create a signature drink. Instead of toasting with champagne or an all-night open bar, have your favorite mixed drink available for guests during happy hour.

Carynn’s Top Trends

Reception Food Stations – Food stations are making a permanent home as wedding reception dining options. Their popularity will explode in 2012. Setting up stations around the room allows for traffic control and eliminates the long wait holding a plate. Offering a variety in foods ensures guests are able to try everything and enjoy mingling. Food station ideas to consider: your favorite foods, ethnic foods, pastas, liquor tasting stations, coffee bars with baristas and so much more. You’re only limited by your imagination!

Dessert Tables – On a related note, the dessert table gains ground over the traditional cake again in 2012! It can include your wedding cake plus so much more: pies, cupcakes, cookies, donuts, candy, miniature cheesecakes, or a gelato cart with frozen treats. It’s a buffet of beautifully displayed flavors and options for guests. We recently posted some creative candy buffet table ideas with a baseball theme. Read, “Check out the looks we’ve pitched!”

Good Night Station – Couples are now combining food and fun for their guests at the end of the evening. Satisfy those late-night cravings with buffets of pizza and sandwiches towards the end of your reception. Set out some sweet treats they could enjoy the next morning like pastries, doughnuts and coffee or hot chocolate, and provide guests with a goody bag to go.

Color for the Bride – Looking for a simple gown that fits the budget, but still has personality? Add a colored sash or a large, colorful flower in your hair — a cheap way to show off your trendy style. Color is hot, and adding a pop of color to your wedding day will show everyone that you’re just as fashionable as the recent celebs that rocked a splash of color in 2011, like Reese Witherspoon and Shania Twain.

Short and Chic – Long wedding veils can be spendy, but you’re in luck! The shorter veil is chic once again and less expensive. Check out this custom-made, ecru birdcage veil with flower, rhinestone AND feather from Etsy. Just $31!

Robin’s Top Trends

Non-Floral Décor Accents – Brides are taking note of today’s fashion and incorporating things like feathers, fabrics, jewels, and metals into the wedding decor. Jeweled accents, “bling,” never seem to go out of style and will sparkle brooch bouqueteverywhere in the year to come. They adorn everything from the bride’s hair to the bouquets (brooch bouquets). Whether paper, fabric, tissue, felt or feathers, wedding décor like bouquets, centerpieces and pomander balls aren’t just made from fresh flowers anymore.

Full-Scale Themes – More than a color palette, wedding themes are carried throughout your wedding, from the invitations and flowers to the linens and dessert. Some popular themes include: vintage, rustic, all white, nautical and seasonal, but creativity knows no bounds, so pick one that reflects you and show it in the details. Hunt down the perfect wedding reception site and favor for your chosen theme. A winery wedding with wine glass favors and tasting stations is a beautiful example of a themed wedding.

Shanna’s Top Trends

E-Invitations Gaining in Popularity – Not as wedding invitations, of course, but they’re becoming more and more popular for pre-wedding events. I recently received an e-invitation for a bachelorette party from paperlesspost.com — quality animation and graphics created a realistic, stylish and elegant invitation. Now don’t get me wrong, weddings are special occasions that deserve special treatment like paper invitations, but e-invitations are also a great option.

Creative Signs – Direct guests to the ceremony, reception, toward cocktails, chalkboard wedding welcome signfood stations and more with signs that fit the style and theme of your wedding. Not only are signs an awesome addition to your wedding décor, they’re super helpful for guests. Have your signs professionally made or do it yourself. Hand-painted barn wood is always charming. Chalkboard paint on a variety of things is very popular. With a little imagination, you can come up with a perfect fit for your wedding.

We received more than 100 comments filled with fantastic budget-savvy advice for wedding planning, and it was really difficult to narrow it down to three winners. If you haven’t read all the great advice, you’re in for a treat! These tips are bound to save you a few bucks so you can splurge on other things.

Congratulations to…

#1. Cynthia L.

“I have been finding wedding vendors and great wedding bargains through charity events and online auctions. I bought a brand new designer wedding gown at a great price from the Brides Against Breast Cancer Tour of Gowns when it came to my city in October. I got a steal on a photographer, DJ, wedding planner, and invitations from the Wish Upon a Wedding online auction which is a non-profit wish granting organization providing weddings and vow renewals to couples facing terminal illness. You can also find some great wedding-related items on “Bidding for Good” online charity auctions in your local community. I recently got a great deal bidding on a wedding hair/makeup package from a local community childcare center auction! Not only do you save a lot of money, but the money you do spend will go to some great causes so you feel really good about it!”

#2. Erin G.

“My best piece of advice: join forces with other brides if you can. A friend and I are both having our weddings next winter, but a few months apart. So far, we’ve used the “lure” of booking two weddings to get reduced rates on DJ, limo, and a florist. If you don’t know anyone getting married, try finding someone online on Facebook or a blog site. It is totally worth it if you can group price!”

#3. Emily

“I found that NOT mentioning the word “wedding” made a HUGE difference in the price of things! A lot of vendors try and capitalize on weddings, so I always told people that we were just planning a “party” whenever we could. Our photographer, florist, and DJ obviously know that we’re planning a wedding, but our linen rental people, for example, think we’re just having a really big party. I priced them out twice. When I called to get a quote for a “wedding reception,” the cost of our linens was THREE TIMES AS MUCH as when I got a quote for a “get-together.” So whenever you can, leave out the word wedding. Along the same lines, look in places that aren’t geared towards brides whenever you can. A “wedding photographer” is going to cost you a ton of money. A photojournalist is used to capture events without intruding as much as possible and they’re usually much less expensive. Our photographer has plenty of wedding experience, but it’s not his only income, so we’re getting high-quality work for a fraction of the cost.”

That’s not all! Here are some great runners-up we have to mention:

First, Kathryn B. suggested to “pay for everything with a credit card. By law your credit card purchases are protected so if a vendor goes out of business after your deposit and before your big day, you can get your money back.“ GREAT protection advice!

Kelli reminds us, “don’t stretch your budget to the end of its life without including the gratuity you’ll be giving people for their services or the service charges and taxes that aren’t included in that already-pushing-it price.”

Kendra shared a great site where brides can buy gently used and/or never used items from other brides: http://ruffledblog.com/recycle-your-wedding/browse-listings/. She also says, “DIY, DIY, DIY!”

And, finally, Grace D. set up a savings account that will withdraw a set amount directly from her checking account every time she gets paid, AND gets interest! She says, “it really helped my budget, and every penny coming out my account goes for something for the wedding.”

Great advice, everybody! Need more tips? Read all the budget-savvy advice.

Post-Christmas sales can help a bride on a budget save FORTUNE. You’ll find a variety of possible wedding decorations marked 50-90% off.

Not having a holiday wedding? Doesn’t matter! A lot of “holiday” decorations can be used all year round. You just have to take the time to shop and find the right items.

What to Look For:

  • White Lights – for romantic lighting at the wedding reception, inside or out.
  • Bulk Ribbon – for accenting stationery, centerpieces, bouquets, Ornamentsgifts, favors, etc.
  • Bulk Netting – for creating favors.
    Candles
  • Battery-Operated Tea Lights
Lighted Branches – for centerpieces and general room décor at the reception.
Silver or Gold Chargers – make attractive bases for table centerpieces.
  • Greenery and Florals
  • Ornaments – can be used in clear glass vases as centerpieces.
  • Beads and Garland – can be used in centerpieces or on tables.

Where to Look:

  • Hobby Stores – probably your best bet for the most variety of decorations.
  • Department Stores – Department stores get picked over fast, so shop early. You can find things like candles, votives, lights, ribbon, etc.
  • Home Improvement Stores – Great for strands of lights in all different colors and lengths.
  • Grocery Stores – the holiday aisle(s) have more than just candy and cookies.

There are plenty of other places to visit and many more treasures you’ll find after Christmas, but this should at least get you started. Have fun shopping, Bargainistas!

What tips do you have for snagging those after-holiday deals?

The holiday season has flown by and Christmas is just a week away. In the midst of all the craziness, you’ve likely forgotten to sit back and enjoy this magical time of year with your fiancé. Don’t fret! Here are a few special things to do for couples this holiday season:

1. Bundle up and go for a stroll through your neighborhood to find the best holiday lights display. Too cold for a walk? Take a leisurely drive instead.

2. Go for a winter hike and make the final destination a bonfire in the snow (if possible). Bring a thermos of hot chocolate and marshmallows for toasting.

3. Take a walk through your favorite city park and admire the familiar surroundings all dressed up for the holidays.

4. If you receive a good snowfall, have some fun with it! Make some snow angels, a snowman or even a snow fort just like when you were kids.

5. Go sledding just the two of you at the best hill in town, and don’t forget to name the sled something awesome like Snow Surfer 2000 or Super Chill Ride.

6. Make reservations at a nice restaurant with an outdoor view, a fireplace or romantic lighting. Be sure to order a classic winter drink, like hot buttered rum or mulled wine.

7. Learn some new moves with your fiancé and take a ballroom or salsa dance class. Bonus: you can surprise everyone with your new skills at the wedding reception.

8. Book an appointment for a couples massage for a little de-stressing. See if you can’t sneak in a hot, steamy sauna before or after the massage.

9. Discover something new together. Take a class doing something neither of you have done before: Thai cooking, pottery 101, glass blowing, etc.

10. Take in a holiday performance. Whether you choose a theater production or a choral concert, you’re sure to enjoy a little something traditional.

You can create easy holiday centerpieces perfect for winter weddings, holiday parties or home décor. See the post from Monday for my first set of ideas. Then grab your handy 6″ glass cylinder to get started with some new creations!

Holiday and Wedding Centerpiece Ideas

  1. Looking for a rustic country look? Layer plates with different patterns but similar tones on top of a placemat. Fill the cylinder with fresh or artificial fruits. We used artificial pears. Tuck in a few berries and you have a beautiful centerpiece. The larger pear would be a great place to add a table number — either painted on or printed on scrapbook paper and attached with a decorative pushpin.
  2. This gilded musical centerpiece exudes sophistication. We placed a brass horn with glittering gold netting on a gold, oval plate. Centered on the plate is a glass cylinder filled with small gold ornaments, gold beaded berry sprays, more gold netting and a gold music note ornament. For all you music lovers out there, ask guests to sing a song with the word “love” in it if they want to see you kiss!
  3. Candy, mints and chocolate…YUM. This delectable centerpiece was created using a red charger under a white plate. Fill the glass cylinder with candies, peppermint sticks or other goodies and wrap a 1″ ribbon around the base. Sprinkle other candies or chocolates around the plate. This centerpiece can be used in lieu of favors. Online candy wholesalers offer a large selection of candies in many beautiful colors to match your wedding look. Order in bulk to save money.
  4. A star-quality centerpiece in pretty shades of blue. Place a glass cylinder on a clear cake plate with raised feet for elegant height. Fill the cylinder with small ornaments in all shapes, textures and sizes. We’ve also tucked beaded garland into the cylinder and draped it around the cake plate and placed a few more ornaments on the plate.

Tip: Many of the decorations and embellishments used in these centerpieces can be found at your local hobby store. Take advantage of after-holiday sales to purchase ornaments, ribbon and holiday accents at reduced prices.

With an inexpensive glass cylinder and some beautiful decorations, you can create a holiday centerpiece that’s perfect for winter weddings, holiday parties or home décor. You may already have a few of these glass cylinders at home. They come in several sizes but I recommend the 6″ cylinder for centerpieces, so guests can talk over it when sitting down.

Holiday and Wedding Centerpiece Ideas

Tip: Many of the decorations and embellishments used in these centerpieces can be found at your local hobby store. Take advantage of after-holiday sales to purchase ornaments, ribbon and holiday accents at reduced prices.

  1. Want to glam it up? Grab a square silver charger — the plate/tray that goes under a dinner plate — and place a glass cylinder with white candle in the center. Then place smaller votives around it. We added color with a variety of pink ornaments and some faceted baubles. You can also use beaded garland swirled around the charger.
  2. For a dramatic look, we lined the glass cylinder with a black linen napkin and we wrapped the rim with fancy beaded trim (attached with double-sided tape). Then we added a few black feathers and one large ornament with a dangling black ribbon. The Initials and Heart Favor Label in ebony creates the finishing touch.
  3. A winter wonderland in silver and white. The base is a felt snowflake and the cylinder is filled with silver ornaments and snowflakes of all shapes and sizes. Prop a few snowflakes up around the cylinder and sprinkle on the table. Top the cylinder off with a larger snowflake on the edge. The larger snowflake is perfect for holding table numbers.
  4. Classic, natural, beautiful. Not to mention inexpensive! Cut a 3 in. wide strip of burlap and pull a few cords away at the edges to get a nice frayed look. Wrap it around the cylinder and tie with ribbon and cord. Fill the cylinder with pinecones and add a small pinecone and evergreen piece as an outer accent. We used real pinecones but artificial greens since real evergreens can be sappy and messy. For an extra woodsy feel, consider setting the centerpiece on a round piece of log cut about 1 in. thick.

I hope these ideas have inspired you to make a unique holiday centerpiece of your own, maybe even several for your next holiday event!
