Have you been searching high and low for the perfect wedding invitation? Do you want something truly unique, but for the right price? Think doing it yourself is the way to go?

If you have never DIY-ed before, this is a must-read! Consider the following:

1. Creating a design is just the beginning. You’ll also need to format the design with your wording for the invitation and all enclosure cards to make everything print ready.

2. You’ll more than likely have to buy extra paper and multiple ink cartridges — all of which can add up to more than the cost of professionally printed wedding invitations.

3. You may have to go to multiple locations to gather enough paper and embellishments.

4. Plan to print every invitation one-by-one, starting with lots of test prints due to possible formatting mistakes or printer malfunctions. And then it’s on to the enclosures!

It’s easy if you have us print your top layer for the invitation and enclosures. Plus you can get your ribbons and embellishments from Ann’s. Check out the 3/8” and 5/8”, 100-yard satin ribbon rolls, 7/8” 25-yard chiffon ribbon rolls, pearls, colored rhinestones and stick-on bows.

Consider the size of the embellishments you’ll be stuffing into the envelope, and be sure you have room! If not, you’ll need to find larger outer envelopes — or just give us a call before you order. We’ll give you a larger envelope than what the invite comes with. We can also print your return address and guests’ addresses! I can hear the rejoicing now…

You have two months to go before the wedding, ceremony details are coming together and you need to get a wedding program created and printed. What does that include? Take a look at our overview below to find out, and feel free to change it up wherever you like.

Front Page

• Normally the front page will include the names of the couple, the wedding date and the place in which you are being married.

Inside Panels

• A thank you message to guests or memorial note for loved ones who have passed are often placed on the first inside panel.

• Continue the program by identifying the officiant, parents, members of the wedding party, and friends or family who are serving as soloists or readers. Include each person’s role, name and relation to you.

• List the titles for all ceremony music, including the processional, service and recessional music. Programs also offer translations if needed.

• If applicable, provide wording for group prayers or readings for guests to follow.

Lots of Lilies DIY Wedding Programs

Back Page

Blessings, prayers, favorite poems, literary excerpts, etc., are all commonly placed on the back page as a nice conclusion to the program. You may also use this space to request no photography or video be taken during the ceremony.

More Tips

• Finalize and print programs about one month before your wedding

• Have ushers or designated children hand out programs as guests enter the ceremony venue. Or, place programs in baskets beside the doors for guests to grab as they enter.

Unique Wedding Program Ideas

• Consider adding a personal touch to your wedding programs with photos, a short story of how you met, or how the groom proposed.

• Tell guests more about your attendants — how you know each other or why that person was selected. Maybe add a humorous quote from each attendant.

• Create two wedding programs — one for the adults and one for the children. The children’s program could include a coloring sheet, word find or dot-to-dot. Include crayons tied with coordinating ribbon and children are sure to stay happy!

• New Idea: Create a reception program. Today’s couples are doing all they can to be gracious hosts, and reception programs are great for letting guest know how long the social hour will last, when the cake will be cut, when the dance will begin, etc.

Wedding Planning Checklist: Section 6: Part 3

Respond cards are the most common way for couples to tally an accurate guest count, which is essential for the caterer and for seating. Although a small part of the invitation ensemble, respond cards are an important part. They save you money on food and they save you the embarrassment of not having enough seating. Here we’ve compiled a few things you should know about respond cards before sending them with your invitations.

1. Respond cards are most common, but R.S.V.P. services are also available. You are given an account with a phone number, which you include on your invitations. Guests respond via the phone number and the service manages your guest list for you. To learn more about this option, check out the original R.S.V.P. service, www.rsvpservices.com.

2. Respond cards are usually sold separately from the invitation, although Ann’s does offer value sets that include a respond card or respond postcard with the invitation, like this Dramatic Accent Invitation in Amethyst with Free Respond Cards.

Dramatic Accent - Amethyst - Wedding Invitation wtih Respond Card

3. Consider response postcards. They’re simple and economical. With postage always on the rise, the savings can really add up.

4. All respond cards include a simple verse, such as “Please respond on or before [date here],” and a place for guests to write their names. You will often see this in the form of “M” with a blank line after it. The “M” begins the guest’s title (Mr., Mrs., or Miss) and the name goes after. Many of today’s respond cards include a space for number of people attending, or number of “accepts” and number of “rejects.”

5. Menu choices are included on the respond card if you decide to go that route.

6. The respond-by date should be three to four weeks before the wedding. You will need time to contact guests who have not responded and to create a final guest list. The caterer will need the head count two weeks before the wedding.

7. Respond cards come with printed respond envelopes for no extra cost at Ann’s. The respond envelopes should include the return address of the person keeping track of the guest count. This could be the bride and groom, or the task could be assigned to a relative or close friend.

8. Respond envelopes should be pre-stamped, always. This is for your guests’ convenience and your own. You want to make responding as easy as possible since your food and seating depend on it.

9. Keep track of the responses by maintaining a numbered guest list. Write a number on the back of each respond card that corresponds with the appropriate guest on your guest list. This allows you to verify that you’re marking the correct person just in case you can’t read their handwriting.

10. Once it’s time to assemble your wedding invitation ensemble — respond card and all — read, Helpful Tips for Assembling/Addressing Your Invitations.

What a romantic time of year to get engaged — congratulations to the newly engaged! Now it’s time find a save the date to ensure the people you love most can make it to the wedding. Lucky for you, we just added some fabulous new designs, and have some Q&As to get you started because we’re sure you’re wondering if they are really necessary…

Why send save the dates?

In today’s world, planning ahead has become a necessity. Save the dates allow your guests to plan for your wedding day well in advance. This is especially important for out-of-town guests, or if you’re planning a destination wedding.

When should save the dates be sent?

Save the dates should be sent as soon as you set your wedding date, which usually includes booking the ceremony and reception sites. This would normally be anywhere from 6 months to a year before the wedding. If you are planning to have a destination wedding or if many of your guests will be traveling, you should send save the dates a year or more in advance.

How much planning is needed to send save the dates?

Not much, so don’t worry! You will need to create a guest list but it doesn’t have to be finalized before sending save the dates. Just remember that only guests who will be invited to the wedding should receive a save the date. Save the dates are not announcements.

You won’t need a lot of details for your save-the-date wording. All you really need are your names, wedding date and something like “Invitation and Details to Follow.” If you’re doing a destination wedding, you’ll want to include the destination, travel agency you’re working with and the resort/hotel information.

What type of save-the-dates should I send?

There are lots of save-the-dates out there that will catch your guests’ attention and express your personalities. We just added new save the date magnets, photo save the dates and save the date cards. To find themed save the dates, visit our favorite wedding partner, Invitations by Dawn.

Planning a wedding can be an overwhelming task, but letting your guests plan ahead is as simple as a save the date. Check out these new designs and find the perfect one! Want to research more before deciding? Read, “Should my save the date match my wedding theme?”

Wedding Planning Checklist: Section 6; Part 2

Here are 5 tips for mailing those wedding invitations.

  1. Wedding invitations should be mailed six to eight weeks before the wedding so your guests have plenty of time to respond and make travel plans.
  2. See A Simple Guide to Assembling your Wedding Invitations, for step-by-step instructinos on assembling your wedding invitation ensemble.
  3. Weigh a fully assembled invitation with all enclosure cards and envelopes at the post office to determine exact postage needed. (Note: many invitations mail for the cost of a standard postage stamp, but some styles may cost more due to unique size and shape.)
  4. Make addressing envelopes easier by ordering your envelopes printed with your return address. Most invitation retailers offer envelope addressing. (Tip: use the same ink color and lettering style as your invitations for a fully coordinated look.)
  5. Don’t forget envelope seals! They add the perfect finishing touch to your invitation ensemble. Order extra seals as accents for gifts, favors and thank you notes.

Envelope Seals

P.S. Double- and triple-check that all names are spelled correctly and titles are accurate before mailing wedding invitations. Misspelling a guest’s name is not only discourteous, it’s embarrassing.

Happy Inviting!
